TEL AVIV—Israel ordered all nonessential businesses and synagogues to close starting Friday, tightening restrictions a week after imposing a second nationwide lockdown as the government struggles to contain a resurgent coronavirus outbreak.

Under the new measures, which will last at least through Oct. 10, all private businesses except those considered vital—such as supermarkets and pharmacies—will be closed. Residents will also have to remain within a one-kilometer radius from their homes.

The lockdown imposed last Friday shut down businesses that cater to the public, including gyms and restaurants...

NEW YORK—Downplaying reports that youth interest in the sport was steadily declining, commissioner Rob Manfred told reporters Thursday that he was confident that the MLB was doing enough to market its star players such as Mike Trout and “Japanese guy.” “We know that stars help sell the sport and that’s why we’re putting all our resources behind that Dominican dude, Aaron something, and that guy with the beard who is real good,” said Manfred, crediting Clayton Kershaw and “some of the other Dodgers” as bonafide superstars who can help grow the game on a global scale. “Some people might say that we no longer have household names, but that clearly isn’t true when you look at a guy like the second or third baseman of the Mets...

The Feito Río bar in Madrid was still recovering from this spring’s lockdown when city authorities, reacting to a resurgence of Covid-19 infections, this week imposed a 10 p.m. curfew on bars and restaurants—right around the hour when many Spaniards like to head out for tapas.

“People who go out for dinner won’t have it at five o’clock, but at nine or even later. If this place has to be closed and empty at 10, you tell me how to do it,” said Javier Huerta, the Feito Río’s manager. He expects the bar to lose more than half of its revenue during the two-week curfew in southern Madrid.

CANTON, OH—In an effort to conceal himself from sight, local undecided voter Jeff McNealy reportedly crouched inside a concrete drain pipe Thursday and remained completely silent as he waited for a convoy of political analysts and reporters to pass by on the road above. “I’m just praying that swarm of election correspondents doesn’t check down here, put a microphone in my face, and ask which way I’m leaning,” McNealy whispered as he crawled through the dark, wet tunnel in hopes of losing the pundits who have tirelessly staked out every swing-state diner, park, and farmers market in the nation as they attempt to gauge the mood of voters still on the fence in the presidential race. “I think I threw them off my trail, but you never know...

LONDON—The British government reversed course and joined other European countries in offering extended help to businesses in the face of a new surge in coronavirus cases.

The announcement follows the imposition this week of a new set of restrictions on the U.K. economy because of the rise in Covid-19 cases, which has led some forecasters to predict a further downturn in the economy later this year.

Britain has already suffered the highest death toll of any European country, and the size of its economic contraction in the three months through June was more than double that of the U.S...

SEOUL—North Korean sailors shot a South Korean official who had drifted into the Kim regime’s waters and expressed a desire to defect, then burned his body, Seoul’s military said, in an encounter that further strains inter-Korean ties.

The unidentified 47-year-old man, an official at South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, had been aboard an inspection vessel not far from Yeonpyeong Island, a remote western island about 10 miles from North Korean territory. He disappeared around midday on Monday, leaving behind his flip-flops and backpack, according to an Oceans Ministry official.

A North Korean civilian ship spotted the ...
